Activities that can be done in this park

Hiking to Uhuru peak

The hiking route to this peak includes Shira route, Machame route, Marango route, Rongai route, Umbwe route and Lemosho route. Hiking to the top of the mountain can take 6-8 days depending on the fitness and the route the guest chooses and celebrations always follow every successful hike.

Animal viewing

The park is a home to over 30 animal species and this activity is one of the most common activities in Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park. The park inhabits both small and big game like forest elephants, Dik-dik, Bush bucks, Bush babies, Hyenas, grey duiker, tree hyrax and many more. On a lucky day one can easily spot the rare leopards at the park, buffalos, mongoose and many others.

Visiting the Chala Crater Lake

This Crater Lake is found at the edge of Mt. Kilimanjaro inside the high crater rim and is one of the largest lakes found at the mountain. The Crater Lake covers 1.6 square mile and it’s a sightseeing site with its incredible waters which range in color from turquoise to emerald green depending on the time and weather of the year. There are some camps around the lake where visitors can enjoy viewing the lake in their own tents or tour around the swamp.

Primate trekking

The mountain is a home to different primate species like Black faced monkey, Baboons, Blue monkey and more. These are found swinging at the tree branches and sometimes come close to the guests as they like playing and snatching food stuffs from the bags of the guests.

Bird watching

Be ready to be received by songs of different forest birds that are found across the park. This park has a record of over 750 bird species with endemic birds that cannot be seen in any other place in the world hence making it a one stop destination for birders. The park is also a home of different African bird species and the most common sited birds are Trumpeter Hornbill, Violent Crested Turaco, Narina Trogon, Ross’s Turaco, African pygmy kingfisher, African Piita, Emerald Cuckoo, Silver-cheeked Hornbill and many more.

Components that make up Mount Kilimanjaro Park Fees

The fees consist of six main components and they are as follows:

Conservation Fees

The Conservation fee is charged for the protection, upkeep and maintenance of the National Park. The fee is US$70 per day per trekker and is charged for every day that a trekker is inside the park. For example, a trekker doing the 7 day Machame would be charged $490 (7 x $70 per day).

Rescue Fees

Rescue fees are charged by the National Park whether you need to be rescued or not. The cost is $20 per trekker per trip.

Guide and Porter Entrance Fees

The National Park also charges an entrance fee for guides and porters. The cost is $2 per support crew member per trip. As this is usually spread across many hikers in a group, the cost is negligible.

Children Under-16

Children between 5-15 years old are charged $20 per day for the conservation fee (i.e. a $50 a day discount) and $10 per night camping fee (i.e. a $40 per day discount). There are unfortunately no discounts on hut fees, rescue fees or crater camp fees.

East African Citizens

Citizens of the following East African countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda & South Sudan) get significant discounts on all fees (up to 90% discounts). You do not need to be a resident in these countries but you will need to present a valid passport at entry.
